Roberto Guimarães

Roberto Guimarães is a retired Justice of TJRJ. With nearly forty-five (45) years of practice in the public service. His practice at TJRJ began while still in the university, during which period Roberto Guimarães worked as Legal Technician, having passed a public competitive examination, having occupied several positions of trust. Roberto Guimarães was then a Public Defender in the State of Rio de Janeiro, having passed a public competitive examination, and having achieved the position of Public Defender of 1st Level and exercised his functions in several Civil, Criminal, and Family Courts. He was also an assistant of the Inspector of the Public Defender’s Office. After that, Roberto Guimarães worked as a judge for nearly forty (40) years, having also achieved this position by means of a public competitive examination. During this long period, Roberto Guimarães exercised the function of a judge in several Civil, Criminal, Public Treasury, Family, Orphanology, and Military Audit Courts, in the latter as a Regional Judge of the Capital City.


He has also worked as Assistant Judge in the Presidency of TRE-RJ, as well as an election judge in several opportunities. Promoted to Justice of TJRJ by merit, he was the judge in several divisions of that Court for over a decade, until he retired in December 2014 as Presiding Judge of the Twenty-Fourth Civil Chamber of TJRJ. Among the several awards and titles granted to Roberto Guimarães for his exemplary career are the Tiradentes Meda, awarded by the State Congress of Rio de Janeiro, the Colar do Mérito awarded by the Association of the Public Defenders of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Diploma of "Jurist of the Year" awarded by the Club of Lawyers of the 20th Subsection of OAB/RJ. Roberto Guimarães has also had a long teaching career in several courses in Law School. Currently, Roberto Guimarães is the President of the Institute of the Judges of Brazil (IMB).
