Mariana Souza

Mariana Freitas de Souza is a lawyer and mediator, having practiced for nearly 13 years in the law form Veirano Advogados. Mariana has a degree in Law from Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and is a Master of Laws, with specialization in ADR (alternative dispute resolution) from Tulane University, in the USA (degree revalidated by UERJ). She also has a graduate degree in Family and Probate Law from PUC of São Paulo and she is fluent in English and Spanish (Diploma Superior de Español como Lengua Extranjera).

Her practice has always been focused on the dispute prevention and on the out-of-court methods of resolution, with a solid experience in domestic and international arbitrations. She also has a vast experience in disputes involving mining, construction, and operation of transmission lines, relations with communities and public agencies, civil liability, consumer rights, and probate planning.

Mariana has taught courses of negotiation, mediation, and arbitration for over 10 years in several graduate programs, such as Fundação Getúlio Vargas, CEPED, and IBMEC, and she is an undergraduate professor at Universidade Cândido Mendes and for programs manages by Escola Superior de Advocacia (ESA) and Escola da Magistratura do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (EMERJ).

A mediator who has been educated and qualified in the USA, Mariana practices at the mediation center of the Supreme Court of the State of Rio de Janeiro (business courts) and at OAB/RJ. She is also the director of mediation of the prestigious Brazilian Center for Mediation and Arbitration (CBMA), where she coordinates the Program of Training and Qualification in Business Mediation, and also the director of Instituto de Certificação de Mediadores Lusófonos (ICFML), being a mediator certified by the same institution.

Mariana is a director of OAB/RJ and also a member of the Committees of Arbitration, Dispute mediation, and OAB Mulher (OAB Women). She is also a member of the Institute of Brazilian Lawyers (IAB), being part of its Committee of Mediation, Conciliation, and Arbitration.

Having published several articles, Mariana is a lecturer in events in the area of dispute resolution in Brazil and abroad, having been awarded, in the year of 2016, with the exclusive Weinstein JAMS International Fellowship, which enabled her to improve her practice in Dispute System Design (DSD) in the USA.
